The Drop’s 10 Best FPS Games (#10 – 6)

The Drop brings you everything you want to know about FPS games, old, new and soon to be released, keeping you up to speed to help you get “The Drop” on some of the hottest FPS titles to ever hit the shelves and lighten your wallets.

Today, we’ll go over our favorite FPS games, numbers 10 to 6 in a countdown fashion. The following titles are some of the most influential and popular in the FPS genre. So lets get started!

Number 10 – Wolfenstein 3D

If only this game had a cover system....

This franchise has come a long way since its inception. In its latest releases, players are pinned against Zombie-esque, mutant Nazi’s in a sci-fi WWII era. But back when this title was formatted in MS-DOS, the concept was simple, yet cleared the path for more suspenseful and thrilling additions. You play as William “B.J.” Blazkowic, a prisoner of Castle Wolfenstein, who stumbles upon an evil Nazi experiment to make super soldiers. Your job is to escape this prison in order to reveal the truth behind these Nazi experimentations. But in order to do this, you must fight your way through armies of Nazi guards, rabid guard dogs and bosses equipped with death-dealing gatling guns! This game also included hidden rooms filled with treasure hunts which ultimately lead to players striving to obtain 100% on each level in as little time as possible. Wolfenstein 3D is considered one of the most influential games that helped paved the way for the FPS genre.

Number 9 – Duke Nukem 3D

Bring your gum to the gunfight!

Duke Nukem 3D was one of the most controversial video games ever developed. Remember when you didn’t need to have your parents with you to buy a video game? Well this game is one of the reasons all of that changed with easily understandable game ratings that accompanied box art. Back when it was released, Duke was the baddest MAW that liked to “kick ass and chew bubble gum.” This swearing chauvinist’s sole purpose in life was to eradicate the scum that is the alien invasion….and to save the world’s hotties. Duke wielded a number of weapons including shotguns, machineguns and rpgs, as well as some futuristic weapons including a freeze gun and shrink ray. Duke Nukem 3D sold about 3.5 million copies and acquired a very strong fan base among gamers who patiently waited for 12 years for Duke’s return in Duke Nukem Forever. Although his latest installment is widely considered to be a “too little too late” attempt, Duke Nukem 3D is still one of the most well-known titles that ever came to FPS. It was so widely popular that it even received several ports to other game mediums including the N64.

Number 8 – Goldeneye

The name's Eye......Goldeneye.....??

Probably the sole FPS that defined my childhood, Goldeneye was based on, what I consider to be, one of the better modern Bond movies to ever be made. Goldeneye was an exclusive release for the N64 console and sold over 8 million copies worldwide. The game incorporated well-rounded and diverse levels as well as stealth elements to the FPS genre. Not only did the single player game draw players into the realm of a British Intelligence spy, but its 4 player, split screen multiplayer brought endless hours of gaming fun to players. You could customize available weapons and choose from hundreds of player skins to bring about your inner killer….including the very cheap Oddjob. Me and my buddies would play a game type called “Terminator” where Jaws had 200% health and body armor. So whoever took him down would then take the reins of the terminator. This game had it all, which is probably why Activision has decided to bring gamers Goldeneye: Reloaded sometime this year on the Xbox 360 and PS3 consoles! Hell yeah!

Number 7 – Counter Strike Source

Maybe today I can pwn enough noobs to raise my rank in the server from 3 to 1....HEHEHEHEHE!

Counter Strike Source was a remake of an already popular game with a brand new graphics and physics engine. I recall the first time I sat behind my buddy’s computer and got a hold of this. The map was the Office and my weapon of choice was the pump-action shotgun. I waited patiently for some poor SOB to come around the corner where I blew his head off. I’d never seen a game portray rag doll effects so eloquently. His head shook from the blast as his body instantly fell lifeless to the floor. And right behind this madness was a blood splatter that spoke to me like graffiti in a subway; a testament to my achievement. It was at that moment that I hit puberty…not really… that’d be sad considering I was about 18. Anyways, among all the major FPS games on the market, Counter Strike is one of the few to withstand the test of time. Partially due to the fact that it has dedicated servers, but also because the game allows players to bring their creative abilities to make new levels, some straight out of Mario Bros. As well as other game types such as Gun Game and even spins with RPG elements and abilities. Counter Strike Source is definitely a classic “must have” among gamers and one that helped to bring professional competitive gaming to the point it is today.

Number 6 – Bulletstorm

Sometimes FPS's just need to let you Kill with Skill!

I used to get drunk and play racing games from the “cockpit/driver seat” view…..better to drink and drive when it doesn’t matter, right? Now I drink and play Bulletstorm. Definitely an underrated game of our time. It doesn’t have the indulgent multiplayer that gamers are accustomed to getting with FPS’s nowadays but what it has is endless amounts of opportunities to “Kill with Skill”! If there was ever an FPS that brought players the opportunity to completely desecrate enemies, it’s this one. You can shoot a guy in the junk and kick his head off while he’s screaming in paralyzing agony! I mean c’mon! Bulletstorm’s massive list of skill shots was enough incentive to keep gamers playing. They also gave players the ability to link up with friends and blast their way through endless waves of enemies in order to obtain the necessary points to move to the next wave. The single player also brought about 10 hours of gameplay. On top of that, you have the Echoes game type, where you play through single player levels in attempts to get a 3 star rating and bragging rights amongst your friends with the highest score. Definitely a game that’s helping to innovate FPS games while bringing in the element of simple, no-holds barred fun!

I’m sure all of you are thinking of some choice titles that have not been  included in this list so far but rest assured, the top 5 will include a few of those titles. That’s all we got for this week. Come back for the top 5 of our countdown in the upcoming days!
